Aquaculture Association of Tanzania Team Met and Held talks with Mr. Alex, Africa Development Bank Tanzania office Country Manager. Our talks focused on development of aquaculture sector in Tanzania. Today more than 40% of all fish consumed in the world is from fish farming. The same amount for Tanzania is 4%, meaning that Tanzania is far behind developing this sector.
Tanzania has excellent agroclimatic provisions and fresh water resources, so the potential to develop a large fish farming sector in Tanzania is present. The demand for fish in Tanzania is higher than the supply and there are indications that this demand will continue to increase due to the decline of fish supply from capture fisheries. Furthermore, fish consumption in Tanzania is low compared to the world per capita fish consumption.
Population in Tanzania is expected to increase to 70.1 million people by 2025; therefore, it will demand a sustainable use of the natural resources. In this context the potential for aquaculture to make an important contribution to food security and income generation in Tanzania is enormous.
